John's 1949 letter about the Hudson family history:

Transcription:

6 June 1949.

Dear Gig:

Your idea of a genealogic table is very good but a little late. I am sending you all the details I have about the Hudson family for the last 200 years. It is a pity we do not have the name of the owner of the farm in 1773, but we are assured he was a gentleman. I cannot give the birthday of my father and mother, I was very young when I was left an orphan. My father was lost at sea in 1872, he was 37 years old. My mother died in September of 1874, aged 35.

Who has more details is Mannie Marshall, as he had a few years ago, the correspondence that aunt Emily had with the solicitor Mr. Anderson in York, he having helped to trace the heirs. You could ask him for it. The list who received over £600 each, are the brothers and sisters of my father. I did not inherit because my father died 7 years before his father. None of my uncles and aunts remembered they had a nephew. Let me know if there is anything else I can inform you. Glad to know Nora is kept busy, and with love to all,

Yours affectionately,

John Hudson

Notes about this letter:

1. Peter Hudson was born in 1837, and 35 years old when he was lost at sea in February 1872, not 37 years old.

2. John was Henry Hudson's great-great nephew. John's father, Peter, died in 1872 while Peter's father John died in 1879. As a result, under the terms of Henry's 1835 will, none of Peter's children were entitled to inherit. John's share of the estate was divided among his children who were living at the time of his death in 1879. The entire estate was worth about £48,000 in 1895.
