John Hudson 1806 - 1879

JOHN HUDSON was born on Oct 3, 1806 in Liverpool, England, and married Sarah Thompson on June 29, 1834 in St. Peter's Church, Liverpool. His occupation was "Block Maker", which given Liverpool's prominence as a port probably meant making block-and-pulley equipment for sailing ships.

John and Sarah's children were Jane (b. 1836), Peter (b. 1837), Sarah (b. 1839), William (b. 1841), Emily (b. 1843), Mary (b. 1844), and Thomas (b. 1848). Our Hudson line is descended from Peter.

During the 1840's the family lived in Dundalk, Ireland. John's wife Sarah was Irish, having been born in Dublin according to the 1861 census. Emily, Mary and Thomas were born in Dundalk. We believe that they still lived in Ireland in 1851, since we can't find them in the census for England.

By 1861 the family had returned to Liverpool. In the 1861 census John's occupation was a Shipwright (a person who builds ships.)

1861 Census listing John, Sarah and family. John was a Shipwright and Sarah was a Seamstress. Their son Peter, our ancestor, was 24 years old and no longer living with them.

At the time of his son Peter's marriage in 1864, John was a Ship's Carpenter. He and Sarah both appear in the 1871 census, where he's also listed as a shipwright.

According to an 1897 document regarding the inheritance of the estate of John's uncle Henry Hudson, John died on August 22, 1879. His living children at the time of his death were Jane Rowlands, Sarah Kermode, William Hudson, Emily ...shall [Marshall?], Mary Gibbons, John Hudson and Thomas Hudson (who died in 1889).
